"The public is not ready for what is in the Epstein Files" sounds condescending.
But when prosecutors, defense attorneys, police officers & detectives, probation officers & social workers post this, they have good reason. I'll explain with my story.
I've practiced criminal defense for a long time. That includes major sex-crimes defense, which includes clients charged with possession of CP (explicit images of Child Pornography).
The CP is not included in the discovery; we get descriptions of it.
That's because possession of CP is SO illegal that even prosecutors & defense attorneys can't possess it (thank God). That material stays under lock and key at police departments.
There's usually no reason for a defense attorney to view it unless there's a possible defense that, for example that the images don't cross the line into depicting explicit sexual activity.
That only happened to me once. A client demanded that I go verify that the state really had this evidence and that it was really CP.
When you've practiced for nearly 40 years, you've seen some stuff.
Autopsy photos of fatal axe injuries, entry & exit wounds, terrible stuff. You don't get used to it, but you build mental barriers so those images aren't readily accessible.
But...you can hear a phrase like "child rape" or "he possessed 15k CP images and videos" and know that it is an ultimate evil and terrible but your defense are up. Most don't hear "child rape" and play a moment to moment movie of the actual rape in your head.
Our brains evolved to protect us from what that does to you.
I drove over to the Bellevue, WA police department and met the detective on a case. It was a small interview room with a couple of small couches and a table. I noticed a box of tissues.
He approached me with a 3-ring binder full of laminated sheets of paper with the images on them. He put it on the table in front of me and sat down quietly.
I took a deep breath & opened the first page.
There were anywhere from 6 to 10 images per page. Sharp, full color photographs.
I had stopped breathing by the time I turned the first page for the second. I didn't linger.
I turned to the third page and said "I've seen enough" as I closed the notebook.
Then, over the course of the next 15 seconds I felt a horrible grief & anguish & RAGE building as if of their own volition and I wept. Openly.
As a 58 year old man in the presence of another man I had never met before.
I have tears in my eyes writing this, I do every time I think about this.
I had no say over whether to cry or not. I grabbed tissues and apologized to the detective, who kindly said "It's okay. It's how I can tell you're a decent human being."
I can no longer see the actual images. They're blocked.
But I saw them.
I saw what adults do to children.
I saw what adults forced children to do.
I SAW WHAT THEY DO TO BABIES.
Babies.
These are not posed shots.
These are stills from videos.
Viewing these images shatters the barriers & defenses we have erected to protect ourselves from the undeniable reality of the most horrific acts one human can do to another.
To a child.
At that moment you know it is 100% real and that toddler went through that and others are going through it likely right this minute.
The knowledge is unbearable.
You can block the images.
You can't block the memory of fully realizing the reality of what is happening to these children.
Think of the first time you drove by a bad car accident & saw someone under a body bag beside the road, or a similar shocking experience.
There's a mental & emotional feeling that you probably only experience a few times in your life. To me it is a mental welling of

NO.

The drive back to the office takes 40 minutes.
Not that time.
I had to keep pulling over, sometimes right to the shoulder of 405 because I couldn't see through the tears that kept coming uncontrollably back.
I got nothing done the rest of the day and little for the next several days.
At first your mind hasn't had the time to throw up barriers yet & intrusive thoughts of the images force their way into your mind's eye.
That collapses you into a disassociated state of sorts every time it happens. But the brain protects itself.
By the next day the images were gone.
That's a blessing.
But the knowledge stays.
Forever.
I know many of you good people reading this feel anguish thinking about it.
The knowledge I'm talking about isn't just the knowledge of how unspeakably horrific those particular images were.
Viewing the undeniable reality of those images bestows an equally and profoundly disturbing knowledge of the true depths of unspeakable evil of which humans are capable.
You no longer just intellectually know about it.
You own that knowledge with no defenses.
When people with experience with child rape & CP crimes say THE PUBLIC IS NOT READY, you're not hearing condescension.
You're hearing a deep in-the-soul anguish shared by those who know something that most don't. You're hearing empathy - for you.
We don't want you to have this knowledge.
We don't want you to really know this about your fellow humans.
We don't want a little part of you that believes in the fundamental goodness of people to die.
It isn't special insider knowledge.
It doesn't make you a better person.
Nothing good comes from this knowledge.
You wish you could go back & be that person you were just before you obtained that knowledge.
Brace yourselves because I'm about to make this much, much more upsetting.
In fact, you can stop reading my post right now.
I'd advise it.
What I saw was the low end, bargain basement CP any pedophile can access for free with P2P equipment. And it was unspeakable.
As I've posted recently, I've represented my share of the white male corporate class.
When you've been doing this for a while and can charge real money, they're the ones that can afford you.
Of course they're not all monsters. But I got to meet many of the ones that are.
They're not particularly smart, but they're full of themselves & insufferably entitled.
I got to the point, as a white male, that I couldn't take them any more. I'm in my 60s now & no longer take those clients.
l've gone back to my first love, public defense, which I do on a contract basis for a nearby rural county. People think public defense clients must be the scum of humanity.
Nope.
They're more typically people born into poverty & its offspring addiction, who rather than being of a criminal mind simply lack the tools to make good decisions & stay out of trouble.
You come to see them as victims after a while. I like my public defense clients. I missed them in private practice.
The real monsters are the ones who do evil while knowing better.
Here's why we say THE PUBLIC ISN'T READY.
Through what we have seen and the people we have met, we know there is no bottom to human depravity.
No floor.
Human (mostly male) sexual depravity is BOTTOMLESS.
So here is the perfect storm of depravity of what is in those files:
1. Lots of wealthy white guys (although not exclusively white, but mostly)
2. Little to no conscience or empathy (sociopathy & psychopathy are common in "successful" executives
3. Weirdly outsized, shocking entitlement & outrage at the concept of consequences.
4. Behind closed doors, shockingly misogynistic (& racist btw)
5. Being with other men of similar traits
6. Complete privacy on either a private island or remote farms as #SachaRileyBarros described.
7. A feeling of invulnerability that travels with their entitlement
8. Unlimited resources & a network of traffickers & molesters around the world.
9. Read this one carefully:
A need by Epstein for video evidence of acts by "guests" so extreme that he has extortion & blackmail power over them for life.
Now take all of that and ponder how it takes the worst of the worst of entitled rich child rapists & allows them to DO ANYTHING THEIR DARK MINDS CAN IMAGINE.
These people are not like you and me.
We are not walking around in the same reality.
They are a different order of being, a mix of malignant narcissism, Machiavellianism & psychopathy.
They DO NOT CARE about the death & suffering of others, including children.
How else could you vote to cut Medicaid, knowing tens of thousands of children WILL die?
You vote that way because YOU DO NOT CARE.
I don't have personal knowledge whether victims like Sasha Riley are telling the truth.
But I think that I and every other person with the knowledge I talk about here read his allegations and our hearts sank because they rang true.
I'm sorry to tell you this and even now a tiny part of me hopes that I'm wrong.
But what happened on that island and on those farms will be an ultimate evil:
Gang rapes.
Murders.
Orgies with children.
Snuff films.
CHILDREN TORTURED. Animals.
Beatings and strangulations
TO DEATH.
We must confront this head on, as a nation and as a planet.
But this will be a war.
These criminals are obscenely wealthy and there are no boundaries on what they will do to protect themselves.
They will kill to protect themselves.
Without a second thought.
I know this is way too long.
But those of us with the "knowledge" must speak out.
Trump's the most cartoonish example of all this, but lots of them are like that but with more impulse control.
This administration is part of this international depravity ring.
Our government is in the hands of baby-raping serial killers, but in suits.
They know it is bad.
They know the truth will destroy them.
Let's make sure it does.
I'm not ready.
No decent human is.
Having seen them doesn't make one "ready".
I hope I am never ready.
That none of us are.
