BREAKING: RED-HANDED! Bari Weiss's CBS News is forced to retract a BLATANT lie about Mayor Zohran Mamdani after they were caught spreading a stunningly offensive story about him.
These MAGA hacks are absolutely shameless...
CBS News — which has completely destroyed its credibility since Weiss was installed as editor-in-chief by Trump ally David Ellison — ran a story covering a petition demanding that Mamdani stay away from the 25th remembrance ceremony for the 9/11 attacks.
The petition was started by Giovanni Galante, who lost his husband on 9/11, and is a transparently Islamophobic attempt to smear the mayor simply because he's a Muslim. Mamdani has never said anything disrespectful about the victims, but he has brown skin and prays in a mosque, so he's an easy target for bigots.
The petition had accumulated 24,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning because there are a lot of racists on the internet, but CBS News falsely reported that "thousands of 9/11 victims' families are asking New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani not to attend this year's solemn remembrance ceremony."
In reality, thousands of 9/11 victims' families are doing no such thing. The CBS News report was based on a story by the Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post, which also cited "thousands of families" on its magazine cover. But the Post story itself revealed the lie because in it, the writers stated that "at least 300 victims’ families" have signed the petition. In fact, the Post quoted just three such family members.
And even that number is inflated.
Journalist Judd Legum dug deeper into the story by reaching out to Galante, who admitted that there is no actual list of families who have signed the petition.
“We don’t have a list,” Galante bluntly said. Instead, the 300 figure was conjured out of thin air based on vibes, assumptions, and wishful thinking.
“We all know each other, so…think about it. If you know 10 people and they give it to 10 more people they know that lost. That’s how we got the 300 number. I don’t go through the list and look at the names," Galante said, deploying the tried and true just-trust-me-bro method.
“[Change.org] doesn’t give you much information as far as who they are, where they came from," he said.
During his conversation with Legum, Galante unleashed an avalanche of hateful lies about Mamdani, claiming that he "has thoughts to get rid of all Jewish people, and to agree with 9/11" and “believes 9/11 should have happened to us.” Not surprisingly, Galante is a Republican who has donated to Donald Trump.
In reality, Mamdani called the suggestion that America deserved the attacks "objectionable and reprehensible.”
Legum reached out to CBS News about their lie and the outlet retracted the line about thousands of families. The revised article states that the petition has "purportedly drawn thousands of signatures, including some victims' families.’"
Before Weiss took over, it would have been unthinkable for CBS News to so unquestioningly report a fake number based on nothing but reporting from The New York Post. The network should have reached out to Galante to investigate the figure but they were so eager to run a piece attacking Mamdani that they just credulously, breathlessly published a lie.
Thankfully, Mayor Mamdani is not bowing to this disgraceful smear campaign. When he was asked about the petition, he said that he will still be attending the ceremony.
“I will proudly honor the families, the survivors, the first responders, forever impacted by that horrific terror attack by standing alongside them at this year’s 9/11 commemoration, reaffirming that we will never forget the solemn day felt by all of us who call this city home and, frankly, by all of us who call this country home,” Mamdani stated.
Please like and share if you stand with Zohran!
