The Collapse of America is Happening Live.
A large study confirms one in five Americans believes violence motivated by political reasons is — at least sometimes — justified. Nearly half expect a civil war, and many say they would trade democracy for a strong leader, a preprint posted on medRxiv found.
The part that scares me the most?
Many say they would trade democracy for a strong leader.
Read that as often as you need to for the magnitude of that attitude to sink in.
How many is "many"? That was my first question. A dozen? Two Dozen?
40% of those surveyed.
Nearly half of the adults surveyed — from varied backgrounds — want a strongman as a leader over a democracy. That is shocking!
Furthermore, "Although almost all respondents thought it's important for the United States to remain a democracy, about 40% said having a strong leader is more important. Half expect a civil war in the United States in the next few years. (The survey didn't specify when.) "The fact that basically half the country is expecting a civil war is just chilling," Wintemute says. And many expect to take part. If found in a situation where they think violence is justified to advance an important political objective, about one in five respondents thinks they will likely be armed with a gun. About 7% of participants — which would correspond to about 18 million U.S. adults — said they would be willing to kill a person in such a situation." (source)
Are you awake yet?
Fascism is taking hold in America. Any student of history can clearly see the writing on the wall. We're utterly unprepared for the fact that fascism has always been far away, and it's always been fascinating for us: Americans and students of history. We suffer as a society from "fascinating fascism." There are entire television networks dedicated to airing documentaries, studies, and profiles on Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, WWII, and the fall of Germany and Western Europe to fascism.
We defeated the Fascists, though. Surely we couldn't succumb to them?
We never thought it would be on our front doorstep, much less in our living room.
Fascism is here. America is collapsing now. First, we must acknowledge the problem. Then we must fight it. More on that to come.
American Collapse is dedicated to the mundane, day-to-day observations of a tumultuous life in the American experiment. Interest rates, inflation, jobs, climate, hunger, politics, healthcare, cost of goods, etc.
